"Art is unquestionably one of the purest and highest elements in human happiness. It trains the mind through the eye, and the eye through the mind. As does the sun color flowers, so does art color life."
-John Lubbok, Sr.
The Birds of a Feather School, a 501(c)3 non-profit that encompasses Cats Crossing Sanctuary, echoes the goal of Virginians for the Arts: "to best demonstrate the ability to enhance the community, lift our spirits, and build a better quality of life." The experienced team of artist-teachers, Trent Carbaugh and Darcy M. Swope, M.A., ATR, NBCT, open their studio to share their gifts and strengths with small groups that are intergenerational and inclusionary. They also provide outreach programs in creative art and living history for schools, differently-abled classes and senior citizens, approaching teaching in a supportive, caring manner through a blend of art education and art therapy. The school's uniqueness is in it's focus on PROCESS rather than PRODUCT, and placing self-expression and joy above mastery of technique. The team takes presentations and projects to larger groups as well, having designed a successful creativity-based corporate workshop for 100+ participants, in addition to church retreat workshops. Swope and Carbaugh enjoy sharing hour-long art projects at birthday parties or any event, either at their studio or travelling to the location of one's choice. Inquiries are welcome!
